An additional $600M in supplementary funding has been approved to be disbursed between the National Drainage Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) to facilitate drainage and irrigation works.

Many retrenched sugar workers are being employed by NDIA for vital works to help coastland farmers.

Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder highlighted that $350M will go to GuySuCo while the remaining $250M will go to NDIA. This move is in keeping with the government’s policy for NDIA to assume responsibility for the drainage and irrigation duties that were once under the purview of GuySuCo.

“The monies going to GuySuCo represents the final payment to be paid in severance to all sugar workers. NDIA has increased operational and maintenance cost of machinery and equipment due to extensive and unplanned works resulting from the prolonged rainy season,” Minister Holder explained.

Under the Ministry of Agriculture’s capital programme over $70M was approved to facilitate payments for the acquisition of an amphibious excavator, three double cab vehicles and five desktop computers.
