Government offering more affordable prices at farmers’ market

Shoppers at Wednesday’s farmers’ market at the Sophia Exhibition Centre in Greater Georgetown said the competitive prices are providing significant relief from the rising cost of locally produced food. They are now calling for the event to be held more frequently.

The Farmers’ Market, an initiative of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, provides a direct link between farmers and consumers, allowing producers to sell their goods directly while shoppers benefit from farm-direct prices.

Among those who visited the market was Emma Samuru, who described the prices as reasonable.

Yasmin Fazil said the prices were considerably more affordable compared to those at traditional markets, particularly for vegetables and other fresh produce.

“I find that the prices are really reasonable compared to the actual market that you go shopping. It’s crazy how much we pay for greens; it’s like gold right now,” she said.

Fazil said the initiative also creates opportunities for local farmers and small businesses to bring their products directly to consumers at reduced prices.

She noted that the cost of living has put pressure on households, and initiatives like these provide consumers with access to affordable local produce and have a positive impact.

Meanwhile, Maureen Kellman said the initiative could help families stretch their purchasing power and afford more food for their households.

“I think it will give them more buying power. They can purchase more and would be able to at least feed their family more comfortably, rather than thinking, ‘Where am I going to get these items to feed my family?’,” Kellman explained.

Most buyers also encouraged the government to continue and expand the initiative.

The farmers’ market is part of Agriculture Month 2026, with similar events being staged in other parts of the country.

The government plans to make the initiative a regular feature, with farmers’ markets expected to be held monthly across several regions.
