As part of Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Ministry of Agriculture today launched its band that will be taking part in the Independence float parade under the theme “Reflecting and Celebrating our Cultivation.” The float was designed by Guyanese designer Olympia Small Sonaram and comprises of two sections; the queen band which focuses on the crops exported during the 1970/1980 period and the commercial section which focuses on livestock, sugar, rice and drainage and irrigation. Sonaram added that “the costumes were made from tie dye, colourful prints and other fabric with colours of the Golden Arrow Head that are representations of the textile industry that thrived in Guyana through companies like the Sanata Textile Mill.”
Also present at the launch was Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder. He expressed satisfaction with the band, adding that “agriculture is an extremely diverse industry and it has played a major role in getting Guyana to where it is today.”
The band is participating under the medium category with 51 male and female revellers traversing the route along Brickdam before heading into the Jubilee Stadium tomorrow.
