Farmers and agricultural communities in Region Two will benefit from more than $832 million in drainage, irrigation, and farm access infrastructure works as the government continues efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity and diversification this year.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said the projects will include the desilting and excavation of canals, construction of bridges and upgrades to farm-to-market roads.
During a meeting with farmers at the Regional Democratic Council compound on Tuesday, the agriculture minister stated that some of the works have already started, while others are yet to begin.
The minister noted that poor farm access roads have been one of the major concerns raised by farmers on the Essequibo Coast, and with those investments, they will now gain improved access.
According to Minister Mustapha, government investments in drainage and irrigation systems, roads and other agricultural infrastructure have contributed significantly to increased rice production and improved yields over the years.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government has been focusing heavily on investments in farm-to-market roads, with President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently making commitments in Region Three, setting aside some $50 billion to begin the rehabilitation of roads.
