New farmlands, drainage projects coming for Black Bush Polder farmers

Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 acres of new agricultural land will soon become available at Black Bush Polder, Region Six, as the government continues to expand opportunities for farmers across East Berbice, Corentyne.

Speaking with farmers during a recent engagement, the minister encouraged those currently renting land to begin applying for their own plots, noting that more than 35,000 acres are expected to become available countrywide by the end of the year.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha

He noted that reducing land rental costs remains a priority.

Meanwhile, the minister outlined several major drainage, irrigation, and road infrastructure projects currently underway in the region to improve agricultural productivity and reduce flooding.

These include the construction of new sluices, rehabilitation of internal canals, expansion of drainage systems, and major road works in farming communities such as Moleson Creek and Crabwood Creek.

An independent irrigation canal for Crabwood Creek, valued at approximately $300 million, is also expected to move into implementation shortly.

Minister Mustapha added that the government continues to provide support to rice farmers through fertiliser assistance, tax-free agricultural inputs, reduced drainage and irrigation charges, and crop insurance initiatives.
