Guyana will launch its regional agricultural situation room within the next month, taking a major step towards strengthening food production and food security across the Caribbean.
The facility will serve as a central hub for collecting, monitoring and analysing agricultural data from Guyana and across CARICOM countries.
It will provide the governments with real-time information to support decision-making and improve regional food security planning.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, announced this on Tuesday. He noted that the platform will significantly enhance the region’s ability to respond to challenges affecting the agricultural sector.
“In another month from now, we’ll have a situation room where we’ll have full data, not only for Guyana, but the entire CARICOM”, Minister Mustapha said.
The platform is expected to provide critical information on production levels, weather patterns, pests and diseases, helping governments make evidence-based decisions and improve regional coordination.
Minister Mustapha said the initiative complemented Guyana’s ongoing investments in agricultural research, innovation and technology, including the establishment of new laboratories and regional agricultural institutions.
According to the minister, the system will strengthen the region’s capacity to monitor food production trends and respond more effectively to emerging threats such as climate change, pest outbreaks and supply chain disruptions.
The initiative also reinforces Guyana’s role as the lead country for the Caricom Ministerial Task Force on Food Production and Food Security.
