The top weather forecast man at Guyana’s Hydrometeorological Department is calling for closer collaboration between stakeholders to improve the weather forecast services.

Chief Hydromet Officer (ag), Dr. Garvin Cummings said that the services that are provided by the Hydrometeorological Department is intended to meet the demands of those in the society who depend on it. These include farmers, fisherfolk and others.

Dr. Cummings was addressing the Fourth National Climate Change Outlook Forum (NCOF), held at the Marriot Hotel in Georgetown.

“What we are trying to do, is to expand the traditional services of just climate and weather and present services that are representative of what a hydromet service (should be),” Dr. Cummings said.

Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Delma Nedd noted the timely nature of the forum which is aimed at bridging gaps between the Hydromet Department and its stakeholders.

“Today’s dialogue is expected to improve inter-agency coordination and collaboration towards managing climate risk. The Hydromet service of the Ministry of Agriculture stands committed and driven to strengthen a national framework for climate services in terms of the development of clear and precise and user- targeted climate information and predictions,” Nedd stated.

NCOF serves as a key national platform for promoting dialogue and inter-agency coordination in responding to national hazards, climate variability and extremes changes of weather.

Among the stakeholders, present were the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
