GuySuCo’s management meets with sugar unions- fate of Wales estate workers discussed

Management of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) today met with representatives of the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) to formally discuss the decision to close the Wales estate on the West Bank Demerara.

GUYSUCO’s CEO Errol Hanoman indicated that there will be future meetings to determine who on the list of employees at Wales will be transferred to the Uitvlugt estate. However, before such is done, the list has to be submitted to the Ministry of Labour.

Hanoman on a programme aired live on the National Communications Network (NCN) last evening, indicated that management will do its bid to ensure most of the employees are absorbed at the Uitvlugt estate.

Due to the sinking economic state of the Wales sugar estate over the years, management recently made a decision to close its operations.
