Ongoing support delivered as 1,704 fisherfolk receive benefits

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, on Saturday, reaffirmed the government of Guyana’s commitment to the fisheries sector, as he spearheaded a cash relief distribution exercise for fisherfolk on the Corentyne Coast.

The initiative fulfils a commitment made by His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to provide direct, timely support to those operating within the fishing industry.

In Region Six alone, 1,704 fisherfolk are set to benefit, representing an investment of $245.6 million, with the funds remaining in the region to stimulate local economic activity.

Addressing fisherfolk at the Albion community centre ground, Minister Mustapha said the exercise goes beyond the distribution of financial assistance.

“What we are doing here today is another commitment and a promise that was made by the PPP/C Government and President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and today we are delivering on that commitment… We want to build an industry that is strong, resilient and one that will take us into the future,” he said.

Over the past five years, Minister Mustapha noted that hundreds of landing sites have been developed or upgraded across the country, including several in Region Six.

These landing sites are facilities that include sheds, lighting, water systems and washroom facilities, aimed at improving working conditions for fisherfolk.

Reaffirming the PPP/C Government’s commitment to strengthening livelihoods in the fishing sector and safeguarding food security, Minister Mustapha emphasised:

“You are risking your lives out there to bring into this country the cheapest form of protein, and the government recognises your role and your contribution.”

The minister also outlined efforts to modernise and diversify the sector, including improved marketing systems, the expansion of aquaculture, cage culture projects, and the production of Vannamei prawns for export.

He encouraged fisherfolk to organise themselves into groups and cooperatives to better access government support and alternative income opportunities, including shade house farming for high-value crops.

Additionally, Minister Mustapha highlighted the removal of taxes on fishing equipment, gears and outboard engines up to 150 horsepower, the distribution of sails and tracking devices for boats, and enhanced security measures, which have significantly reduced piracy.

“The future of the fishing industry is bright. We recognise your importance, and we will continue to work with you to ensure you prosper,” he said.

Some fishermen uplifting their grants

Minister Mustapha noted that this is the second time fisherfolk are receiving a cash grant under the current administration, adding that the total payout to fisherfolk nationwide will amount to approximately $1.5 billion.

He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and assured them that government engagement and support for the fisheries sector will continue.

“We will work with you, engage you, and ensure that this industry remains vibrant and capable of meeting the needs of your families and our country,” Minister Mustapha said.

While in Berbice, the minister also oversaw the distribution of $300 per bag subsidy assistance to rice farmers on the Corentyne Coast, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing timely and direct support to the rice sector.

A total of 1,452 farmers are set to benefit from the initiative, representing an overall government investment of approximately $490 million.
