Georgetown, Guyana – (June 16, 2016) Guyana will be participating in 16th Session of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) set for June 20-24 in Guadeloupe.

 

Cabinet, on June 7, granted its approval for Mr. Gary Baird, Head of the Legal and Inspectorate Unit at the Fisheries Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, to attend the meeting.

 

The priority items on the agenda of the meeting are regional collaboration in addressing illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, capacity building for Regional Fisheries Governance and the way forward for the strategic reorientation of WECAFC.

 

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), at its 61st session approved in November 1973, the establishment of the WECAFC through Resolution 4/61 as the Regional Fishery Body under Article VI (1) of the FAO Constitution. The Commission is tasked with promoting the effective conservation, management and development of the living marine resources, in accordance with the FAO Code of Conduct of Responsible Fisheries.

The FAO is funding Guyana’s participation at the meeting.
